7 Marketing Automation Mistakes That Cost You Sales
Automation should make you money, not annoy your audience. Avoid these seven common mistakes that quietly kill conversions.

Marketing automation is one of the highest-ROI investments a business can make — when it is done well. Done badly, it feels spammy, breaks trust and loses sales. Here are the seven mistakes I see most often, and how to fix them.
1. Automating before you have a strategy
Automation amplifies your process. If your customer journey is unclear, automating it just makes the confusion faster. Map the journey first, then automate it.
2. Sounding like a robot
Automated does not mean impersonal. Write like a human, use the customer’s name and context, and make every message genuinely relevant.
3–7. The mistakes that quietly add up
- Sending everyone the same messages instead of segmenting.
- No clear goal or call to action in each sequence.
- Ignoring deliverability until emails land in spam.
- Never testing subject lines, timing or offers.
- Setting it and forgetting it instead of optimising over time.
“Good automation feels like great service. Bad automation feels like being processed.”
How to get it right
Start with the customer, not the tool. Map their journey, write like a human, segment your audience and test relentlessly. Do that and automation becomes your most reliable, profitable salesperson.
